Lightning is very common in Alberta. For instance, in 2019, Alberta recorded an average of 400,000 lightning strikes. That’s about 1.94 strikes per square mile! Many areas in Alberta saw over 5,000 cloud to ground lightning strikes in 2019 as well. Alberta sees many thunderstorms in the summer and some of them are classified as severe.
